Oct. 2nd, 2009 - Fargo Forum Article
New Fargo film seems natural by Robert Morast
"Typically, you hear or read the words “made by Fargo filmmaker” connected to a movie and it’s easy to assume the movie is terrible.
Sure, I’m being a film snob.
And, yes, Fargo-Moorhead has some talented filmmakers.
But let’s face it, there are a lot of amateur auteurs in our city limits. And while it’s easy to applaud their ambition, much of their work doesn’t deserve applause.
But one local film deserving some attention and accolade is “Pinching Penny.” Or, more accurately, the film’s trailer deserves some props.
Because while I haven’t seen the full film, the “Penny” trailer teases a movie I want to see – and not just because it has Fargo connections.
Directed by Dan Glaser, the movie plays like a low-budget brother of British dark comedies like “Snatch” or “Trainspotting.”
And like that British genre, “Penny” doesn’t appear to be squeamish about blood, vulgar language or illegal activities.
According to a bio connected to a trailer on YouTube, the film follows Alex Sommers, a British hypochondriac forced to grow up in rural North Dakota. He becomes addicted to consumerism and resorts to crime to afford a certain standard of life.
That doesn’t say much, at least not compared to the 1 minute, 12 second trailer, which issues a montage of bloody faces, flashy guns and an alluring femme fatale who looks like Glaser’s sister Ginny, of Trollwood fame (and, believe me, this role is a strong departure from anything at Trollwood).
That last statement underscores why “Penny” is so alluring. It looks gutsy, unapologetic and isn’t trying to capture the “nature” of North Dakota that often comes off as boring, contrived politeness.
Dan was in the process of moving this week to Los Angeles and even a game of phone tag couldn’t connect with him for comments. But there’s word he’ll be back in Fargo-Moorhead in December for a screening of “Pinching Penny,” which is nearly finished.
In the meantime, check out the preview on YouTube, if you can stomach it."
